Rottweil: The home of a canine star

Centuries later, the descendants of these Roman drovers arrive in Germany. Specifically in Rottweil, the city that gave its name to the breed.

We find ourselves in the 16th century: Rottweil becomes an important center for livestock trading. Local butchers quickly realize how useful these dogs are for their work. Their eagerness to work makes them indispensable helpers to lead herds to pastures.

But the "butcher's dog" – the name used for the Rottweiler back then – has much more to offer. With their strong protective instincts, they guard not only the livestock but also their humans and their possessions. When butchers sell their goods at markets, the dogs wear collars with money pouches. This way, the money collected is well-protected! No criminal would dare to approach these powerful guardians!

• 1990s: Tragic times! Unscrupulous breeders focus on size, strength, and aggression. In many countries, the Rottweiler is placed on the list of dangerous dogs. But thanks to responsible breeders, things are looking up again!
